Life U. officials pledge to fight for accreditation

Life University officials said today that the school is doing everything it can to ensure it restores its accreditation.

At a press conference at the entrance to Life's Marietta campus, Kim Williams, an administrator and daughter of school founder and President Sid Williams, repeated the university's plan to appeal the Council on Chiropractic's decision to revoke the school's accreditation of its doctor of chiropractic program.

In the meantime, Williams said Life officials want to meet with the council in an attempt to resolve the problems.

"The assurance we've given our students is we have absolutely no intention of closing our doors," said Williams, who was joined by about 50 supportive students.

Williams said the university first learned the council had concerns in June 2001, when it cited 11 areas the chiropractic program needed to address.

At that time, the council put the university's largest program, which enrolls about 2,600 students, on probation. In April 2002, Williams said, a site team from the council's Commission on Accreditation visited the university, and cited three remaining areas of concern.

Last week, in its decision to revoke the accreditation, Williams said, the council cited four areas as the basis for the revocation, which were among the original complaints.

She said administrators thought they had done everything the commission wanted to correct the problems. "We did everything they asked us to do," Williams said. "Everything they asked us to do we followed to the letter. We followed every suggestion, every piece of advice they gave us."

Wiliams assured students the university will pursue "other necessary means" to restore the school's accredited status.
